Scholars' Bowl is an extracurricular activity for which a student must qualify. To determine eligibility, we review each student's record. Students maintaining good standings in both academic and discipline areas may apply to join the team. The team can have no more than 14 players: 6 A team, 6 B team and 2 alternates, and a tryout competition may be held if it necessary to narrow down the applicants to a team of 14.
The teams for each competition will be selected on cumulative practice scores. The person with the highest score will be the team captain. The next four highest scorers will be on the "A" Team. After the "A" Team has been identified, the next highest scorer will be the captain for the "B" Team. The next four highest scorers will be on the "B" Team. After each competition everyone starts with a clean slate at practice and has an opportunity to be the high scorer in the next competition.
The CTKCS team competes in regular league play one Wednesday a month, with competitions held at various local schools. There will be about 5 of these competitions and both the CTKCS A team and B team will have an opportunity to compete. In addition to the regular league play, CTKCS also participates in two or three Saturday tournaments each year.
The Scholars' Bowl team will meet once a week on Tuesday from 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM for practice. We have a number of books from which we are pulling questions. To supplement the practice books, each student should watch the news and be up-to-date on current events.
Participants in this program are required to complete all regular and Academic Enrichment assignments and maintain a good standing in all academic subjects. If a student fails to meet these requirements or demonstrates any unacceptable behavior, dismissal from the program may result. After one quarter, if his/her grade(s) improve, the student may rejoin the program; however, if a child has been dismissed for unacceptable behavior, he/she will not be allowed to rejoin the program.
Students chosen for Scholars' Bowl are representing Christ the King Catholic School and should be on their best behavior while visiting other schools or while we have guests at ours. Furthermore, the League puts an emphasis on good sportsmanship, so that must be exhibited at competitions as well. If there are any problems with behavior, a student can be removed from the team.
